Electronic mailing lists (EMLs) are designed for busy people, like you and your constituents. EMLs deliver information, news, alerts, opinion, questions and answers directly to the email boxes of those who subscribe to them.
Anytime a message is posted to the list by a subscriber, it is automatically distributed to everyone else who subscribes to that list. Users who reply to a posting are sending that reply to all of the subscribers of that list. In the case of a read-only list, subscribers are not allowed to reply, but receive information important to them.
EMLs can be used in many different ways to further the goals of your organization.
Read-Only List
This type of EML is a one-way email alert mechanism. Generally, only the list moderator is authorized to initiate messages to the list.
Subscribers receive messages, but may not reply or initiate messages of their own to the list as a whole.
Interactive List
This type of electronic list provides a mechanism for facilitating an interactive discussion among a group of individuals using email.
Each participant on the list is able generate and receive messages. When anyone replies or sends a message to the list, their message is broadcast to every other member of the list.
In the case of an interactive list, the moderator typically plays a more active role. The moderator trains users on "netiquette," may also review message content before posting, sets agendas, may "seed" the discussion, and can aid in guiding the discussion toward a fruitful exchange. While discussion lists are clearly more labor intensive, they can be a powerful tool if used in the right context.
Other Features
Messages that are posted to any of the two kinds of lists can be archived and accessed via your Web page so that participants can retrieve information based on subject, date or author.
Members can also subscribe or unsubscribe to a list via your Web site, in addition to using those commands via email.
